The Children’s Ministry (Kindergarten- 5th Grade) will celebrate Purim with a carnival in the Children’s Theater on March 16 from 4-6 pm. with food, carnival games, and costumes. Children are invited to dress as their favorite character from the Purim story. Giving to the needy is part of the traditional celebration so we will be collecting canned goods to donate to Amazing Love Ministries.
Purim is a Jewish celebration of the miraculous deliverance of the Persian Jews from their enemies 2,400 years ago. This story is found in the book of Esther.
Unaware she was a Jew, the Persian King, Ahasuerus, chose Esther to be his queen. Shortly after she was chosen, a man named Haman convinced the king to allow him to kill all the Jews in the land. Esther’s uncle, Mordecai, found out about Haman’s plan and made her aware of the fate of her people. After prayer and fasting, Esther boldly revealed to the king that she was a Jew and pleaded with him to spare her people. The king showed favor to her and instead sentenced Haman to death.
While the outcome of the story could appear to be attributed to Esther’s bravery, we understand that she was used as instrument of God. Purim is a celebration that reaffirms that our lives are filled with God’s presence and He is in control.
